Ready For Your Business Check-Up? Part II by Laurie Hayes

What should you be looking for? Start with the fundamentals:

1. How many hours are you working every week?

2. How much work is left undone at the end of each day?

3. What tasks never seem to get done no matter how much you intend to get to them?

4. Is anything being shared, delegated or outsourced, or are you running the whole show?

5. How much time each week are you performing non-income generating tasks like designing posters, updating your web site, fixing your own equipment?

6. Are you working with your ideal clients or are you attracting people who want things given to them, at a discount or who want to nitpick over every detail?

7. What tasks drain you of energy?

8. Which customers drain you of energy?

9. What expenses take up the bulk of your cash flow?

10. How many projects are you running at once? Do you have several under way, but none complete?

11. Who are you leaning on for support, guidance and helpful resources?

12. Who helps you with brainstorming and trouble-shooting?

13. Who's there to hold a mirror to you, hold you accountable and be willing to tell you the truth when you need to hear it?

14. What's your greatest potential revenue source and what are you doing to ensure you focus the majority of your time and attention on that source?

15. What activities are proven time wasters, but you continue to do them anyway?

Again, this is just a preliminary check list. Get a trusted colleague or members of your mastermind group to help you create a more detailed list that's specific to your business.

If you work through your checklist with truthful eyes and an open mind, you'll discover weaknesses, inconsistencies and room for improvement.

And although this exercise might seem discouraging at first, it's necessary to help you stop doing the things that are hindering progress.

Examine your business thoroughly every three months, identify the limitations and turn them around. This practice will move you to where you want to be faster and easier. As a mentor of mine once said, "Discipline weighs ounces. Regret weighs tons." Do what you have to do now and you'll get to where you want to go.

Commit to a regular check-up on the health of your business, be willing to change your habits and way of thinking and operating, and your business will grow in equal proportion to your personal growth and accumulated wisdom.

Ready For Your Business Check-Up? Part I by Laurie Hayes

In order to build and grow your home-based business, you need to give it regular inspections, kind of like your doctor gives your body a regular check-up or your mechanic runs a computer diagnostic of your car's engine from time to time.

When you're building your home-based business, you're "it". You're the mind, the pulse, the liver, the filtering system, the reproductive system and everything else in between. It's impossible to be objective and see the bigger picture when you're fully involved in all of its intricate workings.

The best way to make sure your business gets a healthy check-up is to put it under a microscope and examine it with a fresh set of eyes at least every three months.

You need to mentally extract yourself from your business and examine it from an outsiders point of view and to be even more thorough, get other sets of eyes to assist.

To begin, mentally put your business in a box. Hold that box in your hands and place it under a powerful microscope.

Next, sit in a comfortable chair with a notepad and pen by your side. Then, lean forward, look through the magnified lenses and start examining the individual workings of the organism in front of you.

How Does a Freelancing Bidding Site Work

A good way to start your freelancing career is to utilize the freelance bidding sites on the internet. There are several to choose from and they can help you build a portfolio of experience to start your own business down the road.

{mosgoogle}

Each bidding site runs a little differently, so you’ll want to check each one out to see what exactly you need to do. Most offer different levels of memberships that range from paid to free. The benefits of each membership package will vary with each one. You will simply sign up for one of the membership packages and type in your information in the profile section to show what experience you have in a certain area. This is where the clients will see what skills you bring to the table and help them determine if you are someone they want to work with or not. Everyday clients will post the projects they need done on the site. The freelancers who are capable of performing the task will place a bid for the project. The clients will periodically check the bids to see who has the best bid and who seems to be the most experienced for what they want done. Some projects will have a specific time period that they will be accepting bids on the job and once that period has been met, the job posting is then closed and a decision is made. Some project postings may be closed before the time period is up, so getting your bid in right away would be helpful. If your bid is chosen by a client, you will be notified, through the site, about the particulars the project holds. The client will probably verify the bid price with you before going any further. The account you have signed up for will provide you with a way for the client and you to contact each other while keeping your personal information safe. Payments for the projects completed and accepted by clients are usually paid through the escrow accounts that the freelancing sites have set up. While you have the option of being paid directly with checks or through PayPal, it is recommended that you use the escrow account offered to you by the site. In most cases, the client would have to pay the pre-determined amount for the project before you start working on it. The payment would sit in the escrow account until you complete the project asked of you. Once it’s accepted, the payment can be released to your account for you. Each site is different in how they work, but most ask you to pay a certain percentage of each project you work on. This could be paid through the escrow from your project payment. Some memberships that are paid give you the option of waiving that fee, so you will want to check each site before deciding which one works for you. Each person that works on a project on a site will receive some type of feedback for the quality of work they performed for the client. If you did well and met the deadline asked of you, you will receive good ratings. The more you find work, the more ratings you can build up in your profile. The highest ratings usually get the highest paid work, so be sure to do your best on every project you win through these sites. A bad rating can hurt you and could be difficult to overcome in the long run. It can make the difference in the amount of bids you win or the possible ongoing work you could have been hired for. Some employers skim through these profiles looking for freelancers to do ongoing jobs for them and aren’t interested in posting them for bids.Your portfolios can be built with the work you do on these sites, which can be useful in the future if you choose to go into business on your own.

Home business

Self employment and self improvement go hand in hand to some degree or another. It is fair to say (though not always true) that self employment could lead to a state of self improvement in the long term. Plenty of people hold the dream of working on there own account but for many it remains just that, a dream. With so much to worry about such as no job security it is little wonder that most budding business owners give up before they even get started.

Unfortunately for many others there is little choice in the matter. They make up the numbers of the ever growing masses that are pushed out of full time work due to company buy outs and size-downs or whatever trendy label they give them these days. These are the people who have had the rudest of awakenings from their corporate slumber to realize that there are no jobs for life and no one is safe from the hatchet man.

For these guys its more a case of self employment or no employment. Having said that, many of them now swear its the best thing that ever happened to them because they discovered who they truly are. They have then gone on to travel the road of self improvement realizing that there is more to life than work and that you can have anything you want if you dream hard enough. They will tell you that they now spend more time with their families doing the things that are important to them.

Its a strange culture that we have evolved into since the industrial revolution where everyone seems to think that they are somehow entitled to a job. That employment is a God given right and that someone out there actually owes them a living. If there are no jobs it must be the governments fault or the powers to be. Yep that's it, it must be someone else's fault that they don't have a job so they will sit around and wait until whoever is in charge does something about it.

Then of course there is the other camp. They see the world in a completely different light altogether. To them the world is their work place. I am not just talking about high flying business executives here either but ordinary Joe's and Jane's with manual skills and talents that they sell to whoever needs them. These are the guys who make up the real ranks of the self employed. Their lives are a work in progress and self improvement is the bi product of their labours.

These people chose when they work and where they do it. They are the true masters of their own destinies and not only their lives but the lives of those around them are enriched by this style of living. They don't rely on a huge corporation to pay their check every month or jump when they tell them to. They take their vacation when it suits them and if they need time of to be with their families they don't have to scrape or grovel to some boss. These are the pioneers of this new frontier, the frontier of the self employed and self improved.
