Best Oil Industries Maintenance - In 'Airline'

Adopting the airlines' approach to the development of maintenance strategies could significantly increase operating uptime and profitability in the oil industry, writes Tony Geraghty, vice-president, Schlumberger Business Consulting.
THE OIL industry overhauls its gas turbines up to three times more frequently than the aviation sector. Yet, given that airline duty for a turbine is demonstrably arduous and that the opportunities for damage to an aeroplane's engine are more frequent, conventional wisdom would suggest that airline engines need a higher level of maintenance.
But in a piece of ground-breaking research in the 1970s, the airlines disproved conventional wisdom. Their findings enabled them to transform their approach to asset management, achieving remarkable reductions in the requirement for maintenance, while also improving safety. By adopting the same methodology for the development of their maintenance strategies, the oil industry could achieve valuable increases in operating uptime and profitability. Is a comparison between the use of gas turbines in the two industries fair? Fortunately, the answer is straightforward (see Table 1): the turbines.
