First aero-space education award - Squadron

Emerald City Cadet Squadron Civil Air Patrol was one of eight squadrons in South Carolina to receive the first National Integrated Aero Space Education Excellence Award.
The award was presented after the squadrons’ participation in a three-day training seminar held at three locations throughout the state. The seminar included classes about aero-space education, radio communications, drug demand reduction, ground team search and rescue, map and compass reading, first aid training and emergency services, and survival. More than 210 senior and cadet members participated throughout the state. South Carolina Wing aero-space education director Capt. Kathy Piersma and South Carolina Wing Cmdr. Emerson Smith presented the award to Maj. Kay Dowling, Emerald City Squadron deputy commander for cadets, and cadet airman Hunter Johnson in Columbia last week. Capt. John Dowling and Maj. Kay Dowling were also presented with individual Aero-Space Education Excellence Awards.
The Emerald City Cadet Squadron meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church on Route 246 and Highway 72 near Piggly Wiggly.
All are welcome to come visit and join. The cadet program is open to those 12 and up, and the seniors program is open to those 18 and older.
