Inspectors : Education bosses have defended Leeds's worst performing school

Education bosses have defended Leeds's worst-performing school after it was once again slammed by inspectors. South Leeds High in Beeston, right, has undergone regular scrutiny since it was plunged into special measures by Ofsted in June 2007. Four subsequent reports all detailed "satisfactory" improvements at the 1,135-pupil school, despite exam pass rate remaining amongst the lowest in the country and truancy rates among the highest. Following their latest visit, inspectors have again given the school the lowest possible category of "inadequate" and criticised the lack of progress. Some badly-behaved pupils were still disrupting lessons, said Ofsted, while too many students produced "slipshod" work and many books were covered in graffiti. Teachers, claimed the inspection team, had inflated pupil grades, scrutiny of work was "badly organised" and the quality of teaching inconsistent. In GCSE exams taken early last November, only nine per cent of Year 11 students gained a C grade or above in maths.
"The previous steady rate of progress since the school became subject to measures has faltered," said the inspectors' report, which has just been published following their visit at the end of March. "Consequently, some well-intended plans are failing to improve the outcomes for students."
