Minister of Education Allowance scheme for New Students

Education Minister Julia Gillard said delaying changes to the regime of Youth Allowance for six months will enable students are not caught between the old and new systems. The starting date of new eligibility criteria for students wishing to receive the allowance has been pushed back from January 1 to June 30, 2010. Ms Gillard said the change will be delayed for people in one year sabbatical in 2009, who must travel to attend the university. Rural students claimed they were unfairly targeted by the changes announced in the Budget in May because they had already postponed their studies by then. They had expected to earn $ 20,000 this year and thus qualify for the rate independent of support during his studies in 2010 and beyond. But changes of government instead require students to work 30 hours per week for 18 months to qualify. Ms Gillard said Wednesday that delaying the changes to income support for those who move away to attend university should give students the opportunity to meet this requirement. "We've obviously listened reaction to this major reform," she told reporters. "I listened to specific students, including earlier this week in Canberra. And we have responded to the concerns of students caught in the variation between new and old systems. "
