After IPL Snub, Pak Ban Indian TV?

Pakistan is not taking the rejection of its players from the third edition of the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament -- Indian Premier League (IPL) lightly, with the controversy now creating a ruckus in their national assembly. Still smarting from India's snub, the Pakistan government seems to be considering a total ban on all Indian channels aired in the country. In the Friday session of their National Assembly, Information Parliamentary Secretary Azeem Doltana said a proposal to ban Indian TV channels was under consideration. This comes after a call to ban the screening of IPL 3 in Pakistan. The royal IPL snub has already had some major political repercussions, with Pakistan canceling the visits of its delegations to India. The IPL controversy is now turning political, with the Pakistani government is taking the matter further. The Information Minister confirmed that there was a proposal to ban Indian Television from Pakistan. Earlier, the Opposition had said that after the humiliation meted out to Pakistani players, IPL 3 should not be aired in Pakistan. There was also a call for a ban on screening of Indian films in Pakistan since it was a major source of revenue for them. These threats were followed by a demand to boycott all sporting activities with India and even reconsider not allowing the Pakistan hockey team from participating in the 2010 World cup hosted by India. Even as the controversy over the IPL snub gathers storm, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now promised to take the matter to the International Cricket Council. The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board Ijaz Butt said that the PCB will take up the matter in the ICC executive board meet scheduled for February 10. The ICC, however, is unlikely to comment on the issue as the IPL is a domestic event.
