Overview:

Cheyney University, founded in 1837 by Richard Humphreys, a Philadelphia Quaker. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also enter fields such as journalism, medicine, economics, science, industrial arts and communications. Today, Cheyney students representing a variety of different races, cultures and nationalities. It is a coeducational university with an undergraduate enrollment of 1,535 students, 1,420 are full time and 115 part time.

Dedicated faculty members work closely with students and demand from them all that is needed to prepare them for career success and responsible citizenship.

The 275-acre Cheyney campus is situated on rolling hillsides in southeastern Pennsylvania, an area changing from rural to suburban. The surroundings, small classes, and modern facilities provide an ideal atmosphere for learning.

Cheyney is accredited by the Middle Eastern states association of universities and schools, and its programs in education are accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Doctoral programs in education and teacher certification are offered to Cheyney's Urban Center in Center City Philadelphia.

Location and Community:

Cheyney is 25 miles west of Philadelphia. SEPTA bus service is available between the campus, Center City Philadelphia, Chester, and several locations in Delaware County. Lancaster is 1 ½ hours away, and Harrisburg is 2 hours from Cheyney. Wilmington, Delaware, is 15 miles south of Cheyney; New York City and Washington, DC is 2 hours away. Academic life:

Completion of 128 semester hours required for a bachelor's degree. Of the 128 hours is 40 percent of the general education, and the rest is necessary for the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, health and physical education and electives. Army ROTC is available.

Qualified students may conduct independent study projects and internships. A cooperative education program allows students to work and study in alternate semesters. Department, and Allied Health Sciences organizes summer research projects for science students at the nearby medical colleges. On-campus Head Start site and Academic Achievement Center provides opportunities for education majors to apply classroom concepts in real life settings. A study from the University internship program coordinator helps students secure internships and places students according to their programs, or personal interests.

The academic skills center offers support through mentors and advisors for students who seek academic support. The first year's Studies Program ensures that all first-year students is the maximum potential to develop his professional skills through a series of placement tests in English, mathematics and reading.

Cheyney's Honors Program is open to all high school graduates, regardless of year of graduation. Students in the Honors Program are enrolled in several classes, as a group and have their own special schools, complete with computer rooms and reading rooms. Honors students have the opportunity to interact and be identified as a group while also participating in the activities of the entire student community.

Cheyney's faculty members have earned degrees in such diverse institutions as Columbia, Fisk and Howard; Juilliard, Temple, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania; universities in California, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Nagpur University, Punjabi University, the Universities of Madras and Kerala and the Sorbonne.

Majors Offered:

Cheyney offers bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, communication arts, computer and information science, economics, English, French, science, geography, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, social relationships (criminal justice and sociology), social studies, Spanish, theater and art. The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in business administration (accounting, management, marketing, office administration, small business management and tax accounting), clothing and textiles, hotel, restaurant and institutional management, and recreation. The Bachelor of Science in education can be acquired in early childhood, elementary and secondary education (majoring in biology, education, chemistry, English, French, science, mathematics, social studies and Spanish), domestic science and special education.

Facilities and resources:

Leslie Pinckney Hill Library houses about 200,000 books, plus a periodic collection of more than 23,000 bound volumes and 1,100 current subscriptions. Audiovisual and CD-ROM full-text/images databases, access to the Internet and World Wide Web access available. The library also houses the famous schomburg Collection of African-American history and culture on microfiche.

Cheyney's Telecommunications Center consists of an 240-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art satellite TV options, a cable television facilities, a TV studio, and AT & T teleconferencing and distance learning center. AT & T has installed twenty fully loaded Pentium computers with network access in telecommunications center. Primarily used for training of private and public teachers in Pennsylvania districts in using the internet facility is available for use at Cheyney students.

Cheyney has formed a partnership with Navigation Technologies, a company that designs databases for intelligent transportation, travel, and traffic markets. Students use very sophisticated technology and programs that create economically efficient and environmentally friendly transport.

Students in the apparel and textile industry has great access to computer-aided design software to create designs for clothing, upholstery and furniture, among others.

Campus Life:

Living on campus is desirable, especially for first-year students. Off-campus housing is available in nearby communities. Resident students enjoy a rich culture and social life and a sense of community. Facilities include five dormitories, a full-service dining hall, and a student / alumni center. Student interest groups include a drama club (the Cheyney players), premedical and prelaw society, the business club, Chess Club, choir, band, cheerleading, Latino Students in Action, the International Students Association, and a dozen other groups. Several honor societies and Greek-letter organizations are also active.

All students are members of the Student Cooperative Government Association (SGCA), which sponsors many cultural, educational and social events and bring speakers and performers to campus. SGCA and other student representatives sit on all University committees. One student representative is also selected to serve on the University Council of Trustees.

Sports / Varsity Athletics:

There are many opportunities for on-campus recreation. Cheyney is beautifully situated outdoor tennis, volleyball, basketball and handball courts. The athletic building houses large and small gymnasiums and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The Cheyney Wolves have won national recognition in women's and men's basketball and wrestling. Other sports include football, men's and women's tennis and track and women's volleyball. Cheyney's open-test policy allows all interested students to test for any team if they follow the grade point average required for participation. Students are covered by a full-own program.

Cost:

Admission Requirements / Application:

Cheyney University seeks students who not only academic ability but also the talent and diversity. Students are encouraged to provide an overall picture of themselves in their application, including children's activities, interests and academic goals. The Admissions Committee assesses applicants on the basis of school records, SAT or ACT scores, and recommendations from teachers and counselors. As part of the state system of higher education, the University gives priority to residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. However, the University welcomes out-of-state and international applicants. The admissions office encourages visits to campus and organizes guided tours and information sessions with staff members, students must call to make an appointment. Representatives from the admissions office visit many schools throughout the year to increase contact with students.

To qualify for admission, students must submit a completed admission application, an official copy of high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, SAT or ACT scores and a $ 20 nonrefundable application fee. Transfer students are required to submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. A completed Dean's Recommendation Form is also required for transfer students.
