Indians Celebrate Republic Day

The Indian community in the UAE celebrated the 61st Republic Day of their country on Tuesday with renewed enthusiasm fired up by the recent announcement of the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh that overseas Indians will be given voting rights. Consul General of India in Dubai, Venu Rajamony, who hoisted the Indian national flag at his official residence, and read out the message from Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, urged Indians to rededicate themselves to further strengthening the development of India and its people.“There is much that India has achieved in the last six decades that we can be proud of. At the same time, we must rededicate ourselves to the task of strengthening our nation and improving the livelihood of the people,” he said.“Indians, who live abroad, especially in the UAE, have played a major role in advancing the development of India. I urge all Indians to continue to do their utmost for their home country and at the same time strive to strengthen the welfare and security of their st country, UAE,” he added. The speech was followed by patriotic songs. The Consul General and senior officials later attended a special ceremony organised by the Indian High School, Dubai which saw 2,500 students take part. A food court for charity was also organised by the school. Rajamony also hosted a traditional reception in the evening which was attended by members of the royal families, government officials, prominent Emiratis, diplomats and members of the Indian community.In Abu Dhabi, Charge d’Affaires (Cd’A) of the Indian Embassy, RC Nair, unfurled the national tricolour during the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Embassy and read out the message from the Indian President. Nair is currently in charge of the Indian mission as the name of the new Ambassador of India to the UAE, to succeed Talmiz Ahmed who has been just shifted to Saudi Arabia, is yet to be announced.
