Car Insurance Payout Problem Areas

According to the Financial Ombudsman Service has seen a 70% increase in car insurance complaints over the past six months.

With the value of cars is rising, motor elects to repair cars as appose to write them down. This has resulted in most disputes between consumers and insurers are based on poor quality repairs and valuations.

Cost of repairing cars worth £ 30,000 to £ 40,000 can easily be in the region of £ 15,000. Because of this, many insurance companies prefer to have repairs conducted at one of their workshops, while consumers may prefer their vehicle repaired at a garage.

Consumers who find themselves in this situation do not have to accept repairs at the garage their insurer offers. They can choose exactly how they want their vehicle to be repaired.

Furthermore, the vehicle leaves the garage in perfect condition. Any dissatisfaction with the quality of repairs and the insurer should commission a report from an independent engineering report.

Another major problem Ombudsman found that there has been an increase in the number of consumers who have been denied payment when their car was stolen.

"The typical scenario is that you get up one morning and your car is gone. The insurer somehow blames you for it, and refuses to pay up on the grounds that it can not be stolen," Robert Short, lead motor insurance ombudsman.

Insurance companies justify this move by saying that many of today's cars are equipped with advanced safety and that the only way the car could be stolen, is down to consumer carelessness.
