Cheyenne Frontier Days

Cowboys and fans of the old west will love the Cheyenne Frontier Days, with 10 days of rodeos, concerts and Western history, all held in the last full week of July in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Known as "The Daddy of 'Me All", Cheyenne Frontier Days celebrates the Old West the way it was more than 100 years ago in Old Cheyenne. After all, where the state myth of the cowboy was born. The festival draws an estimated 300,000 people to the area each year.

The biggest event in Cheyenne Frontier Days is the PRCA / PBR nationally sanctioned rodeo. The rodeo billed as the largest event of its kind in the world, with over 40 bucking bulls and over 70 saddle and bareback bronc in each performance. There are nine daily rodeos, where you'll see the bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback, rookie bronc, steer wrestling, steer roping, team roping, tie-down roping and barrel racing. Each rodeo is about 3 1 / 2 hours long.

You will also enjoy nightly concerts by renowned musical and comedy acts, a carnival and fair with rides, games and food vendors. There are also wild west gunfighter shows and demos. A highlight of the festival is the free pancake breakfast, which nearly 40,000 people participate each year. In one week, over 100,000 pancakes can be served along with 3,000 pounds of ham. An air show U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron takes place each year on Wednesday. The Thunderbirds shares history with Cheyenne Frontier Days, when they made their public debut at the 1953 festival. Ground part of this show, along with static displays and fly with other aircraft, will take place at the U.S. Air National Guard side of the Cheyenne Regional Airport. The Thunderbird AEROBATIC primary display is carried out over the campus of Laramie County Community College.

Visit Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, where you'll see exhibits on Western American history, culture and entertainment. You will see a collection of nearly 150 horse-drawn vehicles and one of the largest collections of historic cars in the U.S. There is also a kids' room! The museum is open year round with special hours during Frontier Days.

After dark when the celebrations calm down, you can visit the cowboy-style bars and country and western theme establishments scattered throughout the city of Cheyenne. There are plenty of chain hotels / motels and B & Bs, but be sure to book well in advance of the festival. Area campsites also tend to fill early on this popular event, so it is advisable to book a campsite as soon as possible. Cheyenne camping area must be full, there are other camping opportunities within an hour's drive into Laramie, Pine Bluffs, Fort Collins and Greeley.

Cheyenne is located in the southeastern corner of Wyoming and served by Cheyenne Airport. North-south Interstate 25, which runs from New Mexico to Wyoming, cuts in the city with the east-west Interstate 80 that runs from California to New York. Most festival events are centered on Frontier Park, although some attractions that are taking place in other parts of the city.
