Chamber & school district progress report released on June 23

The Austin Chamber of Commerce and IBM will host an education roundtable on June 23 where nine Central Texas school districts and 11 area chambers of commerce will release their 2008 Community Education Progress Reports. The reports will highlight each district’s performance in college and career readiness, middle school academics and other areas, while also looking at areas where more work needs to be done. “The future direction of local tax rates and how these tax proceeds are used is in our hands,” said David Reiter, general counsel at Austin-based life sciences company Luminex Corporation. “It is critical to the long-term success of our metro Austin communities for there to be alignment between the needs of local businesses and the ability of our schools to deliver a well-prepared and skilled workforce.” Reiter and IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs Manager Sandy Dochen will lead a panel discussion of whether performance-based management has helped schools produce more graduates ready to support Austin’s economic development, and how school districts’ 2009-2010 budgets and upcoming tax rate decisions can continue to support those efforts.
