Four honored as model fathers of the year

Two Nashville physicians, a talent agent and a businessman were recently selected as fathers of the year by the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association and the Middle Tennessee Father's Day Advisory Council. Although this year's winners' professions vary greatly, the four men have had at least one thing in common: a packed schedule. They credit their wives with helping them balance work and family. They were recognized for successfully juggling the two and serving as role models in their communities on Thursday during a fundraiser ceremony just three days before Father's Day.The event benefits the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association. The group and the Father's Day Council have put it on for seven years. Both organizations pick between four to six honorees every year based on their commitment to being an exemplary father and a professional. Title recipients don't have to have connections to diabetes to be recognized. The Father's Day Council is a group of professionals who honor fathers whose achievements and values enhance the meaning of fatherhood. Here's what this year's fathers of the year had to say about their children, career and diabetes.Dr. Barton Campbell, 71, has been practicing medicine in Nashville for almost 40 years, 25 of them in partnership with Vanderbilt University as co-director of the cardiology department at Saint Thomas Hospital. He co-founded the Page-Campbell Cardiology Group in 1975. It later formed a partnership with Vanderbilt University Medical Center with the creation of the Vanderbilt Page-Campbell Heart Institute. Campbell is a native of Hastings, Neb., and received his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He and his wife, Audrey, have three grown children and six grandchildren.
