Scholarship Amounts is Increased CISD Education Foundation:

Recipients of Conroe Independent School District Education Foundation student scholarships will receive more next year. However, they will have to wait until after college graduation for more than half of their funds. The CISD Education Foundation board voted unanimously April 16 to increase student scholarships by $1,000 for a total of $9,000 per student. But $5,000 of that will not be awarded until the student returns to CISD to teach, foundation president Nelda Blair told the CISD board Tuesday. “We made the changes specifically in an effort to retain scholarship winners as CISD teachers,” Blair said Friday. Some students already do return to CISD to teach, “but not enough,” she said. “The whole idea is not just to send kids to school, but to grow our own teachers,” Blair said. Of the $9,000 scholarship, the foundation will award the student $1,000 per year for four years of study. Once a student signs on as a teacher with CISD, he or she will receive $2,500 as a first-year sign-on bonus, followed by another $2,500 for a second year with the district. “The thought being when they come back, they might have several offers, but this may make that difference,” Blair said. Teacher scholarships of $500 to be used within a year remained the same. One college even approached the foundation about forming a partnership to match funds for the teacher scholarships, Blair said, adding she could not disclose the name of the college since the idea had not been approved by its board. Since then, the foundation has distributed letters to other colleges offering to partner for teacher scholarship funds. The CISD Education Foundation formed in 2001 as a 501(c)3 to provide scholarships to graduating seniors who wish to pursue a degree in education. In April, six high school seniors and 19 CISD teachers received scholarships. Application forms for CISD Education Foundation scholarships are delivered to lead counselors at each CISD high school at the beginning of the calendar year. Applications are due Feb. 28. ounselors screen and select 10 students as candidates. A committee appointed by the foundation reviews the applications and chooses recipients.
