The Star’s advocacy of the Common Core State Standards initiative (6/10, Opinion) is understandable, but it alone will never result in an improved education system. Public schools are hamstrung by two factors: the mandate to provide schooling to all children, irrespective of the children’s desire to learn, and the failure of parents to provide a disciplined, nurturing, learning-based home environment. As a consequence, schools must devote inordinate resources to security, discipline and providing remedial education to children from education-deficient families.
Until we address these issues, no set of standards will improve public schools.
