10-point plan to drastically change Iowa is governed

Des Moines school board member Jonathan Narcisse says he will formally unveil today a 10-point plan to drastically change the way Iowa is governed. The proposal, "An Iowa Worth Fighting For: A Ten Step Vision Plan for 21st Century Governance," proposes changes in education and public safety, as well as a crackdown on methamphetamine use. The plan is needed because Iowa leaders have let down residents, Narcisse said. "The issues that are really affecting Iowans are not being addressed," he said. "The 10-step plan really takes on those issues. I think this is going to be a phenomenal opportunity to introduce a new conversation into government." Narcisse is not running for re-election to the school board. Narcisse said he and about 25 other people who are part of his newly formed group, An Iowa Worth Fighting For, will travel to all of Iowa's 99 counties to hold town-hall-style meetings. The meetings' goals are to generate public demand for some of the ideas and weed out undesirable ideas, he said. Narcisse said that, too often, decisions are made without involving ordinary Iowans. Part of the plan calls for the firing of "the current director of the Iowa Department of Education" and other top education officials. Judy Jeffrey is the department's director.
