The biggest contributor of export dollars to the country

THE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY, THE biggest contributor of export dollars to the country, is working to diversify its market and product range, in an effort to get out of its current slump.Semiconductor and Electronics Industries of the Philippines Inc. chair Arthur Young said electronics exports were currently composed mainly of semiconductors, which comprised 75-80 percent of the total pie. “There’s no question that Philippine exports need to diversify. The electronics industry needs to widen the range of products it offers, to diversify to other segments of the electronics market,” he said in an interview. “We need to diversify our end-markets and end-products.” To do this, he said the country had to attract foreign investors who would infuse capital into facilities that could fully integrate the processes involved in putting together various devices. Instead of just supplying components for flat screen television sets, for example, he said the country could assemble the appliance here, using parts that were already in production here today. “The industry is really trying to diversify. We need to go upstream with our end-products,” he said. “I think we’ll continue to grow, we just need to diversify.”
