Students were Suspended from wearing a headscarf

Bantwal (Dakshin Kannada): In the present generation, where the numbers of students are ever increasing in the schools and colleges, Dress code has been one of the highly debated topics. Many of the interviews with many of the teachers and principals in the past years have made it clear that dress code is not necessary, if the student dress decently. Now, the question that arises here is - whether wearing a headscarf is a mark of indecency and seeking attention? Aysha Ashmin(18), a student of first year B.Com studying at Sri Venkaramana Swamy Government aided degree college is paying the price of wearing a headscarf while in college. Ms Ashmin is suspended from the college and is not able to attend her classes since August 7. Although she has secured 78% marks in her 10th and 12th standard examinations, her future seems to be dwindling as she will not be able to admit herself in any other college in the middle of the academic term. All that she has been doing since her suspension is sit in front of the principal's office during the day hoping that she would be allowed to rejoin classes. According to Ashmin, the nuisance began subsequent to the general body election of the college which was held on 25th of July. The new student president commanded her not to wear her headscarf in the campus claiming that it was upsetting the harmony of the college. Her rejection to the demand made her an object of ridicule in the college. Ashmin stated that the senior boys began taunting, howling and even threatened in the college corridors. She affirmed that she was called to the principal's office on the 6th of August and the principal had directed her to either stop wearing the headscarf or stop coming to the college. She tried to reason out to the principal that she felt awkward to stay without the headscarf in a co-education college.
