Bureau of Labor Statistics reported national unemployment of 9.5 percent

Here’s some good news to balance the economic gloom and doom: In terms of employment opportunities, Indianapolis is a pretty good place to live. In June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported national unemployment of 9.5 percent. At the time, Indiana was one of 13 states whose unemployment rate had topped 10 percent. In the Indianapolis-Carmel metropolitan area, however, the unemployment rate was 8.7 percent. “Central Indiana is holding its own in terms of this national and international recession better than other areas,” said Marc Lotter, communications director for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “The area is performing above the national average and doing better than many other parts of the state.” In fact, Lotter said about 15,000 new positions have been created in central Indiana since the first of the year, partially reversing a loss of 16,000 jobs in 2008. “There are signs of life, and things are improving,” said Lee Michaels, regional vice president with Robert Half International, a staffing and consulting firm. “The second half [of the year] should be a little better than the first.”
