The state came to a employees

Kochi: Banking services in the State came to a standstall as employees of banks in the public and private sectors began a two-day strike on Thursday morning. The agitation is being organised by the United Forum of Bank Unions, consisting of nine associations. The striking employees took out rallies on MG Road in the heart of Kochi. The rallies would converge in front of Andhra Bank on MG Road where a dharna would be staged. The UFBU Convenor Johnny said that the strike would be total, except in the cooperative banking sector. Cooperative banks are not taking part in the strike. The employees on strike would reach the branches of the new generation banks to seek peaceful cooperation of the employees. Banking operations including clearing would be affected as even the top officials have joined the strike. Kochi's commercial establishments will be affected because of the interruption in the financial transactions. Kochi port and the public sector oil companies will be among the worst affected. Though the ATMs are functioning, many of them may go dry by Friday as fresh loading of currency will take place only after the strike is over.
