Basic Education Angie Motshekga's decision

Pretoria – Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga's decision to have the country's coat of arms appear more prominently on matric certificates, is the reason that thousands of 2008 matriculants have not yet received their original certificates, even though they got their results about nine months ago. Granville Whittle, spokesperson for the department of education, confirmed on Monday that there was a delay in the process of printing the certificates. However, he didn't believe this could lead to any candidate being disadvantaged, since they had received proof of their results after they were announced.Delay These print-outs were accepted by higher education institutions and employers. However, candidates would have to return to their schools to receive their original certificates. Whittle said Umalusi, the council for the assurance of quality in general education and training, had assured the department that the first new certificates would be handed out this week. Dr Mafu Rakometsi, chief executive of Umalusi, said the council and the department met at the end of April regarding the new certificate, and a formal request was tabled at the end of May. The request was for a more "South African" certificate with the country's coat of arms as a background image and in the middle of the certificate.
